Ensure A Proper Fit For Your Complete Denture Or Partial Dentures

With proper care and routine dental visits, it is possible for your dentures to last a very long time. How can you help ensure they do?

Regularly take inventory of your dentures. Do they still feel good and fit well? Are they loose? Do they create sore spots in your mouth when you wear them? If they do – don’t shelve them! Dentures – whether partial dentures or a complete denture set – are a costly investment. Your dentist may be able to bring new life to your mouth with some simple adjustments to make them feel better and fit better.

You see, as we age, our mouth changes. Our gums recede and the gum line pulls back. This can cause dentures to loosen. Another factor of aging is that the bone in your mouth can shrink, and this can cause further problems. Your jaw can become misaligned – and this can further impact the fit of your dentures.

It is entirely possible that your dentures, which fit well a few years back, may now not fit so well. Not such an uncommon thing really. Poor fitting dentures can cause jaw pain, sore spots and can actually cause a change in your facial features. But that doesn’t have to be the case!

You know you need to wear your dentures – but if they don’t fit or feel uncomfortable, what choice do you have but to leave them out? Plenty of options actually!

At least annually, visit your dentist for a complete checkup and exam. He will ensure your dentures are in good shape and still fit well. Ensure proper care of your dentures too, which means brushing daily with a soft bristled tooth brush to remove plaque and any remnants of food. And, when not in use, always store your dentures in cold water, or a denture solution recommended by your dentist.

With proper care and regular visits to your dentist, you can enjoy proper fitting dentures for many years to come.

See Your Dentist Regularly

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Why is it so important to see your dentist regularly? Why do you really need to see your dentist every six months?

The reason is likely to sound like something your mother told you several times – “because it just is”! So listen to your mother – and your dentist!

Whether your dentist practices general dentistry or family dentistry, be sure to visit according to a predefined schedule of oral examinations. If you carry dental insurance, for most insurance companies, this will be twice per year. This schedule is ideal to keep a watchful eye on your teeth, gums and mouth. But this certainly does not discount the need for taking care of your teeth yourself!

Because you put so much into your mouth each and every day, you need to be certain you are performing a solid regimen of routine dental care. You probably have already been told this, but this means brushing and flossing at least twice a day – once when you get up in the morning and once before you go to bed at night (if not more often during the day). This will ensure that any food particles, as well as sugary substances from sweets and beverages or other residue, are cleaned away.

It is doubly important to both brush and floss because food and sugary substances left behind don’t always remain on just the surfaces of your teeth. They get trapped between teeth, behind teeth and at the gum line. With the double-action attack of both brushing and flossing, particularly when you do it at the recommended schedule of twice per day, you will be sure to wipe away as much of this leftover residue as possible – on both the front-facing and rear-facing areas of your teeth, as well as between teeth and at the gum line. This practice, combined with routine visits to your dentist in Valparaiso, Indiana, will help ensure good dental health.

You see, food and sugary substances from prior meals, drinks or snack left to settle on your teeth, between your teeth or on your gums, will do just that – settle in! They will take foothold and cause havoc in your mouth! If left alone, these little critters can grow and cause even larger problems including (but not limited to) cavities, abscesses, gum sensitivity (including bleeding gums), gum disease and more. So don’t risk it!

Whether your dentist practices general dentistry or family dentistry, be sure you visit twice per year, as your dental insurance provides for. And in between, be sure to practice a healthy routine of brushing and flossing at least twice a day.

If you are new to the area, or are looking for a new dentist in Valparaiso, Indiana, chose the gentle dentistry practiced by Dr. Joseph Majka and his team of dental professionals. Skilled in both general dentistry and family dentistry, Dr. Majka and his team will provide the kind of professional, caring dental care you have been searching for. Cleaning Your Dentures After Holiday Eating

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

At this time of year, you’re probably be eating and drinking some delicious food and drink. Homemade cookies and candies, cranberry sauces, pies, red wines, teas, punches and coffees. If you wear dentures (partial or complete denture sets), you’ll find that stains are much more prevalent during this time of the year than really any other. All these sugary and deep colored foods and beverages can stain your teeth. But with some careful and thorough cleaning, your dentures can look bright and sparkly all season long!

Follow these helpful tips to clean your dentures and keep them looking good:

·         Thoroughly brush your dentures following eating or drinking every day. In fact, your best chance at fighting stains is to brush them as soon after you eat or drink as possible. But this may not always be possible, and some stains will just naturally be tough to get out with partial or complete denture brushing alone.

·         In addition to rigorous brushing, soak your dentures overnight (every night) with effervescent tablets such as Polident or Efferdent. This soaking and oxygenated cleaning action can effectively combat many denture stains.

·         For even tougher stains, follow the above steps and then try soaking your dentures in white distilled vinegar. A once weekly soaking of your complete or partial denture in white distilled vinegar may be the end of tough stains.

·         If none of these remedies eliminate the stains on your dentures to your satisfaction, contact your family dentist. He/she may have stronger options for addressing those truly tough partial or complete denture stains. Dr. Joseph Majka, a family dentist in Valparaiso, Indiana can help you return those dentures to the bright shining state they once were. Contact Dr. Majka today for assistance.

So go ahead – enjoy those delicious holiday treats! Don’t worry about stains on your dentures! Do I Really Need To Floss?

Monday, October 5th, 2009

Modern general dentistry is a strong proponent for flossing regularly. You probably hear it every time you visit  your family dentist. Have you been flossing? How often do you floss? Are you flossing correctly?

The fact is, flossing is one of the single most important tools in your arsenal on the war against plaque. In case you weren’t aware, plaque is that soft, sticky residue that accumulates on your teeth from eating food, drinking sugary beverages, and the bacteria that results from both. If plaque accumulates and is not removed in a timely manner, it can lead to cavities, gum disease and loss of teeth.

Flossing is a great supplement to brushing your teeth regularly because it gets all the gunk that gets stuck between your teeth that your toothbrush often misses. In fact, most in the general dentistry profession agree that flossing is an unrivaled tool in the battle for good oral hygiene. In fact, many dentists feel that flossing is as important, if not more important, than brushing!

Did you know that flossing can actually benefit your overall general health too? It’s true! Dangerous bacteria can build up between your teeth in as little as just eight hours after eating. Bacteria builds upon bacteria, and if left to accumulate, over time, can cause you to become mildly ill from swallowing the harmful bacteria.

The fact is, those in the family dentistry profession know that brushing alone cannot prevent gum disease, gingivitis and cavities. Your toothbrush cannot reach all the places that dental floss can. It takes the powerful combination of brushing and flossing to eliminate all the bad stuff that accumulates in your mouth. By brushing and flossing, you can enjoy a cleaner, fresher feeling mouth and ensure good ongoing dental health.

So do what the experts in family dentistry recommend: pick up your toothbrush and brush at least twice daily. And with each brushing, make sure you floss between each tooth to make sure you remove all those dangerous remnant food particles and bacteria collecting in the spots your brush cannot reach.

So You Have All New Teeth Now! Be Sure To Care For Those Dentures Properly!

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

So you have solved your difficult dental dilemma by getting dentures. What a great solution to replace teeth that are just not functional any longer!

Whether replacing just a few teeth — or maybe you have gotten a complete denture to fill your mouth — you will find dentures provide the dental solution you have been looking for. And with proper care, you dentures will last a very long time!

If you are new to dentures, or you have had dentures for a long time, some refresher tips on the proper care of dentures is always helpful. Whether you have partial dentures or a complete denture, these same tips will come in handy.

  • Remember to take good care of your dentures when handling them. Treat them as you would a piece of fine china. Avoid dropping them, or dropping anything on them. Since a complete denture can be slippery, when handling dentures, stand over a sink full of water or a soft, fluffy towel. If you happen to drop them, either of these will cushion the drop.
  • Just like your natural teeth, it is essential to brush and rinse your dentures daily to remove food and plaque that has collected on them – and to help eliminate the possibility of permanent stains from forming on them. Between brushings, remember to rinse your dentures thoroughly following each meal.
  • When brushing your dentures, always use a brush with soft bristles – one that is specifically designed for cleaning dentures. Avoid hard bristled brushes, as they can damage the face of dentures or cause them to wear abnormally. Brush all surfaces gently, taking great care to not damage any of the embedded plastic or metal.
  • When cleaning your dentures, always use a denture cleaner, hand soap or mild dishwashing liquid. Avoid household cleaners or toothpaste, as they may be too abrasive and damage your dentures. Always look for products with the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance on them to indicate good products to use for cleaning your dentures.
  • Always be sure, when not wearing your dentures (either partial dentures or a complete denture set), to keep them moist so they do not dry out or lose their shape. Store them in a denture soaking solution, or in cool water. Never place dentures in hot water, as warping could occur. Be careful with dentures with metal attachments before soaking them too – to avoid tarnish on any exposed metal.
  • Never attempt to repair or adjust your dentures yourself. Bending of clasps or attachments can weaken them and cause permanent damage to your dentures. Avoid any “do it yourself repair kits” or over-the-counter glues. These products can contain harsh chemicals that can weaken or damage your dentures.
  • Be on the lookout for warning signs too! If you notice signs of mouth irritation or sores in your mouth or on your gums – or cracks, chips or loose teeth in your dentures – contact your dentist. A repair or adjustment may be needed – and your dentist is the best person to do that.

If in doubt about how to properly care for your dentures, just ask your dentist – or your dental professional who provided your partial dentures or complete denture. They know your mouth best and will be best to offer the kind of quality care and advise you need.

What Are Dentures?

Monday, December 8th, 2008

Dentures function in the mouth to replace missing teeth and adjacent tissue. Whereas dental implants are firmly “installed” in the mouth, dentures are removable.

A denture is formed to fit the unique shape of your mouth via a mold. Dentures are typically made from resin and porcelain. They are designed to fit the specific neuromuscular formation of your mouth. This means they are precision fit to provide for optimum positioning of your jaw and bite, helping to ensure optimum comfort.

Complete and partial dentures both work to ensure a better more complete overall appearance, but they also help improve chewing ability, clear speech, and better support facial muscles.

There are typically two types of dentures available: a complete denture and partial dentures. A complete denture is designed to replace all the teeth. A partial denture is used to replace only teeth currently missing in the mouth, with other natural teeth remaining around it to help keep the remaining healthy teeth from shifting positions within the mouth. Because of the precision work required for a complete denture or partial dentures, make sure the dentist in the Valparaiso, Indiana area you choose has experience in dentures.

Dr. Majka is well versed with years of experience placing a complete denture set and partial dentures. Upon an initial diagnosis, Dr. Majka will determine which approach is best for you – complete or partial dentures.

If partial dentures are best for your particular situation, he will assess specifically which teeth are to be replaced. He will then make any necessary extractions of teeth that are or could become compromised by the dentures. Following a period of healing and rest for your gums (typically several weeks), Dr. Majka will prepare a wax impression (or mold) of your mouth. This mold will help determine the optimal position of the jaw, the alignment of the bite, and the size, shape and dimensions of the teeth.

Once the wax mold is set-up, it is sent to a dental laboratory. A try-in”, or initial set of dentures, is then prepared. This “try-in” is placed in the mouth to ensure fit, comfort, bite, position, placement, and appearance.

Upon your approval, the final dentures are prepared by the laboratory and delivered to Dr. Majka. The Doctor will then perform the final fit and placement of your new complete denture or partial dentures.

With today’s modern dentures, you can expect exceptional comfort, fit, and a totally natural appearance. Unlike the dentures of yesteryear, trips to the dentist for adjustments are nearly eliminated – and your dentures are more durable and conducive to eating the kinds of foods you really like! And with virtually no known complications and financing available, there really is no reason why you should not consider getting a complete denture or partial dentures today!

Have you lost some or all of you teeth? Do you wonder if you could benefit from today’s modern dentures? Let Dr. Majka and his team schedule your personal assessment today. Call for an appointment to find out how dentures could benefit you.
